Author: EDUC150 FallClass
Subject: Science
Grade Level(s): 3–5
Duration: 1 Day
In this lesson, the students will learn about the states of matter and their properties.
Lesson Description for Day
The lesson will start out with the teacher bringing a large bag of objects to the front of the room. In the bag will be a mug, a container filled with water, balloon filled with air, a pencil, a block, and a container of juice. The teacher will hold up each item and ask "What is this - liquid, solid, or gas?" The students will say outloud what they think that it is. The teacher will then ask "Why is this a solid? (or liquid or gas)?" The students should have different answers that vary and are not the formally correct one. The teacher will guide them to answer "properties"or "characterstics and traits". The teacher will then show a video clip from BrainPop.com about the states of matter on the Smart Board. The students will take notes during the video clip. At the end of the video clip, the class will take an interactive review quiz and go over the answers as a class. After the quiz, the teacher will present a short powerpoint presentation that goes more in depth with the properties of the states of matter which is based off of the information in the student's textbooks. Then, the students will go onto the computer application Kidspiration individually, and choose the "States of Matter" template to complete the concept map using the information that was portrayed in the video clip and the powerpoint.
